Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961/rules 1998

Under the provision of the Act, specific rules viz. Puducherry Dowry Prohibition Rules 1998 was notified. Under the provisions of the Rules the regionwise Dowry Prohibition Officers are appointed at Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam to peruse the complaints lodged under the provisions of the Act/Rules.

Domestic Violence Act/rules

The Act was enacted by the Government of India on 26-11-2006. In respect of the Union Territory of Puducherry, Protection Officers, Shelter Homes and Medical Facilities are notified for all the four regions. Applications received from NGOs for registration as Service Providers are under process. Six numbers of Family Counsellors are appointed as Protection Officers and functioning in the Family Counselling Centres located in the ICDS Projects concerned.

Sexual Harassment of Women at Working Places

In order to ensure the safety of women at working places a Complaints Committee has been set up as per the directions of the Supreme Court in this Union Territory. The Director of Department of Women and Child Development, has been appointed as the Nodal Agent/Stage Level Officer to the Complaints Committee on Sexual Harassment for this Union Territory.

Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006

Under this Act, Rules for this Union Territory have been framed and notified on 16-11-2010. The Child Marriage Prohibition Officers for the four regions have been notified as under.

Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956.

A State Level Co-ordination Committee under the Chairmanship of Chief Secretary to review the situation and progress made in the implementation of the National Plan of Action and Provision of Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956 has been set up under this Act. The Committee plans for the actions to combat the trafficking and exploitation of women and children and for making strategies for prevention, rescue and rehabilitation of women and children who are victims of sexual exploitation.

Children's Day Celebration – 2017

Children’s Day was celebrated on 14th November, 2017, at Kamban Kalai Arangam, Puducherry, to Commemorate the birth Anniversary of Late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the former Prime Minister of India. The function was presided over by Thiru. M. Kandasamy, Hon’ble Minister for Welfare. Competitions were conducted among the Anganwadi children and prizes were distributed to them. Cultural programmes were also performed by the Anganwadi children of the four ICDS Projects and by the children of the outside areas. Awareness on POCSO/CWC/Child Helpline/SCPCR & Safety and Security of children, Child Birth Rate etc., to the Pregnant Women and Lactating for mothers of Anganwadi centres were conducted by CDPOs in ICDS Projects of Puducherry region in collaboration with the “Adecom Network” on the campaign “Gender Equality”. Certificates were awarded to all the children who participated in the Children’s Day programme.

Quami Ekta Week – Women’s Day 2017

The National Integration Week (Quami Ekta Week) is celebrated from 19th to 25th November, every year, with 24th November as “Women’s Day” by the Department of Women and Child Development. During this day, the importance of Women in Indian Society and their role in development of Nation Building is highlighted.

This Women’s Day was celebrated on 24th November, 2017, by the four ICDS projects, among the girl students of various Government schools creating Awareness on Self Security and Safe Adolescent period, Women’s Issues, Life Skills and Leadership quality, Schemes for Adolescent girls, Role of Women in the family as well as in the society, Child Helpline and Women’s Helpline, Sexual offence, Child Marriage and Child Rights and Speeches of Advocates about the POCSO Act, Sexual offences Act, Dowry Act and issues on Empowerment of Women were delivered. Various competitions were conducted among the students and prizes were distributed to the winners. Cultural programmes were also conducted by the students.
